I've realized that one of the more challenging parts of yoga isn't so much the stretching... its stopping my mind from wandering... any help?Whats a good exercise to help keep your mind clear and focused during yoga?
SWAN Whats a good exercise to help keep your mind clear and focused during yoga?
Start with 3-part breathing. The breath works as a bridge between the mind and body and will help anchor the mind inside. Then throughout your poses, use drishti points. These are gazing points, such as your thumb, the tip of your nose etc. Each pose has their own points of gazing. Gazing is important instead of looking. Looking is when you're staring outward and trying to figure something out, it can really excite the mind. Gazing is with soft eyes and allowing visual stimuli to enter but without too much thought. Drishti also helps keep you from looking over at the person next to you practicing and thinking ';wow, they've got a really nice mat, where I do get one of those?'; ';Oh man, that person's really flexible, I can't be that flexible.'; etc.
Also find a teacher that can help you focus on the inner workings of the body, rotating the thighs inward, and all the million others. Then when you fully enter the pose, your mind is focused inward, let go of it all (staying in the pose) and enjoy the moment as it is.
I hope this helps...
Well, the purpose for yoga is not to clear your mind, its to relax your body... so its not really a bad thing for your mind to wander. If you are doing the stretches and start thinking about your math homework its fine. although, if this is really bothering you i recommend doing your breathing exercises twice as long and as you do put your hand on your stomach and imagine yourself filling up with air, and slowly letting it go like a balloon. It also helps if someone leads your meditation for you, right before you start... where they say stuff that relaxes you. Hope that helps!
in yoga, you really have to focus and learn the art of concentration. there is actually no particular kind of exercise. just keep in mind that whenever you are about to execute a yoga pose, try to calm and convince yourself that you are entering into a world where peace is the only language.
