In the nutshell, i'd like tips on how to clear my mind and focus on thinking for long periods of time. How do you clear your mind and meditate?
The Q is not put right
You clear your mind by meditating.
Simple Technique from my dad.
Just take a Mantra - 2 syllable phonetic word (no known meaning - to avoid new thoughts like Om - ha hoo, AA ING)
without trying to concentrate or repeating hard, chant rhythmically in mind that 2 syllable word, in course of time when you realise you are in thoughts and not mantra, go back to mantra. Increase or decrease rhythm till you find one. this can vary daily and when more thoughts come more speed chanting.
Min 10 minutes. 20 minutes twice a day will help. (even 5 min will relax anytime in job) can do in any posture, anywhere (except when you are driving). If you are feeling vibrations on head, light on fore head (look between eyebrows while chanting) good. Headache. stop you are pressing too much. breathing may reduce or stop for awhile during meditation. very normal and good. when thoughts come breathing will be more.
do not bother why you deviated, do not go after those thoughts what they were. thoughts that come out are the ones left out in processor (brain) after storing in hard disk (memory) (similar to stack overflow error after VB program running). the meditations clears it like a duster cleaning blackboard.
after few cycles of mantra-thought-mantra you will be having clear mind.
Spread it if you find effective. (if not no harm effects expected, but no liability to me)
Thanks you

Basic Mindfulness Meditation: Find a quiet and comfortable place. Sit in a chair or on a cushion on the floor with your head, neck and back straight but not stiff. Put aside all thoughts of the past and the future and stay in the present moment. Become aware of your breathing, focusing on the sensation of air moving in and out of your body as you breathe. Feel your belly rise and fall, the air enter your nostrils and leave your mouth. Pay attention to the way each breath changes and is different. Watch every thought come and go, whether it be worry, fear, anxiety or hope. In mindfulness meditation one is 'an observer' of thoughts that arise in the mind during meditation. These thoughts are neither analyzed nor harshly judged but are recognized as they simply are: thoughts and feelings. They are not to be selfishly clinged to, for selfish clinging causes suffering. We use the breath as an anchor. What does this mean? When a thought/feeling arises in the mind, we observe it-making a mental note of it, then we gently return to the breath. This practice of mindfulness meditation requires patience and through daily practice - patience is cultivated and wisdom is gained. Remember not to be hard on yourself when your thoughts wander; be gentle with the mind, and simply return to the breath.
Henepola Gunaratana-in his book 'Mindfulness in Plain English' covers what meditation is, what it isn't, attitude, the practice, what to do with your body, what to do with your mind, structuring your meditation, set-up exercises, dealing with problems, dealing with distractions, sati or mindfulness, mindfulness vs. concentration and mindfulness in everyday life';.
';Wonderful it is to train the mind - so swiftly moving, seizing whatever it wants. Good is it to have a well-trained mind, for a well-trained mind brings happiness';. Dhammapada 35 - 'CittaVagga: The Mind'. -The Buddha.
